Quantcast
It all started when I decided I wanted to give my mom and
dad a puppy. They had just moved from a large home to a
condo on the second floor. I knew they wouldn't want to
have to take a dog outside for potty breaks. I  started with
the puppy pads, but they were too messy. The pads worked
great but were proving to be a wonderful new source for
entertainment. He would tear them up, drag them around,
sleep on them, or just walk through the deposits. I tried
taping it to the floor but all I got was a bigger mess of sticky
goo when the tape was removed. I cut a piece of 'used' pad
and put it in a litter box filled with wood pellet bedding. I
believe it's the same stuff used in wood burning pellet
stoves. (BTW, the pine type is  better because the cedar
type seems to 'taste better'). A grate of some sort is
necessary at first as he was immediately drawn to the
comfort of a new 'bed/toilet'! I ad-libbed at first and used a
cake rake from the dollar store. Later I cut a piece of plastic
coated wire to fit. By the time my pup was 12 weeks old he
was using his box 99.9% of the time! The only problem
were having now is that he cheats sometimes and only puts
his front feet in when he pees. Sometimes it's in the box,
sometimes it's not. I found a new use for all those extra
pads. I put one under the box to catch the mistakes.
Sometimes his butt hangs over the side .... I'm going to try a
box with higher sides, maybe even an enclosed one.  I will
keep this updated. Here's a picture that gives you an idea of
what I did.
